3 Steps for Finding the Perfect Wedding Suit

So the big day is near, and you want to make sure that your tux for the event is classy, unique, and sure to impress your bride.  Finding the right tux can be difficult though.  There are many questions that need to be answered ahead of time, before you find yourself in the tux shop.  By having a basic idea of what you want, choosing a tux for the wedding doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think.  Here are a few steps to find the perfect men’s wedding suit.

1) Formal or semiformal wedding?

It is important to talk to your fiancé during the planning stage and decide if the wedding will be formal or semi-formal.  The formality of a wedding largely decides if you should purchase or rent a tuxedo over a suit and vice versa.  The tuxedo is most commonly worn to a formal wedding by the groom and the groomsmen.  However, for a semi-formal wedding, a suit is more common.  At semi-formal weddings, the groom and groomsmen most commonly wear a dark suit with an off color white shirt underneath.

2)  What is the right style for your wedding?

Semi-formal wedding’s you can also wear a dark tuxedo, but you will need to make sure it is worn with an off white shirt during the fall, winter, and spring months.  You will need to include a vest or cummerbund, with a bow tie to bring the whole thing together.  For the summer months, the popular styles include adding khaki to the mix, or evening sporting the white suit, which goes great for summer and destination weddings.

Formal weddings require a little less creativity than informal weddings.  It is impossible to go wrong at a formal wedding with a black tuxedo, white shirt, bow tie, pocket square, and a vest.  For very traditional weddings, you can also consider using a tail coat and a cummerbund.

3)  Should you rent or purchase a tuxedo or suit?

When considering renting or purchasing your suit, there are some special considerations you must make.  First off, how often will you use your tux or suit?   If it is going to be several years, then renting will make most sense and save you more money.  However, if you purchase a tuxedo or suit and have it tailored, then you are going to feel fantastic and look great wearing it.  Remember though, that styles change throughout the years, so if you do purchase something, try to keep it traditional so that you can add to it later in the years.
